Illness is the dark side of life, a type of more expensive citizenship. All living people have this double citizenship, one within the realm of health and the other within the realm of illness. Although we all prefer to only use the good passport, sooner or later each of us will be forced, at least for a short time, to identify as a citizen of the other country.

Susan Sontag: Illness as a metaphor

There are moments in our life that, if we are given to reflect on at all, mark the beginning of a new beginning. Some come from joy, while others occur as a result of empty shock.

Series by Ildi Hermann and Judit M. Horváth are photo-diaries of an extraordinary situation. Processing the fact of the illness and documenting the treatment and the recovery are poignantly effective. The question of self-exploration and the feeling of “it can happen to you at any moment” pervade the photos.

Two artists, two female artists make the incomprehensible seen through photography.
