Tamás Dezső
b. 1978, Budapest

Jószefváros

Tamás Dezső worked as a professional photojournalist for years, collecting all sorts of honours and awards in Hungary and abroad. His series on Józsefváros is a telling document of the district’s residents and their living space. In fact, it is more of a reportage, an imprint of a micro-world, a space humanised in the course of many decades just to be deprived of its humanity by the bulldozers and urbanists of the present. Radiating a sense of safety and security, this materiality deprives the people in the photographs not only of their place of residence, but also of their past, turning the former Hungarian “Harlem” into a model of urban politics.

Dezső made his series Józsefváros in 2004, supported by the Budapest Photography Grant.
