György STALTER
b. 1956, Budapest

Town in the City

György Stalter’s studio is none other than Józsefváros, the 8th District. The social microclimate of the district contributes to forming his identity and artist’s image. In addition to guiding us through this district, his photo series informs us of the artist’s identification and confrontation with his environment. The photographs can be interpreted as subjective documents of the age, and they were made using expired negatives and cross-processing, resulting in distinct, unexpected colours across the entire series. This balances the radical reality which is characteristic of any community in a doomed yet vivacious small town in the depths of a metropolis in some developing country.

Stalter made his series Town in the City in 2006, supported by the Budapest Photography Grant.
